NASHVILLE (TSU News Service) – Anjli Aurora Hinman, co-founder of Midwifery Development Center in Atlanta, will be the featured speaker, Thursday, November 10 for the Annual Christine Sharpe Distinguished Lecture Series. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Hinman will present a talk on “The Legacy of Leadership: Nursing Call to Action” beginning at 7 p.m. in the James E. Ferrell & Fred E. Westbrook Agriculture Research Complex (The “Barn”) located on the Tennessee State University campus.

Hinman is a certified nurse midwife and family nurse practitioner and was the only advanced practice nurse on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing committee. This committee, working under the auspices of the Institute of Medicine, prepared a groundbreaking report on the nursing profession, called The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. During the lecture, Hinman will include nursing leaders from the University in her presentation as well as work from the groundbreaking report she helped co-write.

Hinman graduated with honors from the University of Michigan in 2002, holding a dual degree in Biology and Women’s Studies. After graduating, she left Michigan to work on her Masters in Public Health at Boston University where she concentrated on Maternal and Child Health, and held an internship with the Department of Public Health working with Family Planning Clinics around the metro Boston area. She became involved in issues surrounding healthcare for the homeless and immigrant populations, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, and promotion of breastfeeding.

She completed her education through the Emory University’s Nurse-Midwifery and Family Nurse Practitioner Program where she was a Woodruff Fellow and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2008. She has served as the Director of Breakthrough to Nursing for the Georgia Association of Nursing Students, and as President of the Emory Student Nurses Association. Hinman is past President of Health Students Taking Action Together (HealthSTAT), a student-led non-profit organization with a mission to create a statewide community of interdisciplinary health professionals students that are engaged in education, activism, and service, and now currently serves on their Board of Advisors.

Sponsored by the College of Health Sciences, Division of Nursing, the Christine Sharpe lecture series was established at the University in 2000 in honor of Dr. Christine Sharpe, retired Associate Dean and co-founder of TSU School of Nursing. The lecture is held yearly as part of TSU’s Homecoming events, and include distinguished leaders, researchers and educators who deliver cutting edge and thought provoking presentations about a wide range of topics in health, nursing education and public policy.

NASHVILLE (TSU News Service) – Community college students who want to complete a bachelor’s degree at Tennessee State University now have a guarantee that their credits will transfer to TSU if they choose one of 26 different majors offering transfer pathways.

The offerings are part of the Tennessee Transfer Pathways program, a statewide collaboration announced Monday between the Tennessee Board of Regents and the University of Tennessee systems to allow for timely and cost-effective transitions from a two- to four-year degree. These pathways are effective for the fall 2011 semester.

Under the program, a student entering a community college in Tennessee now can select designated TSU majors with accompanying transfer pathways, complete required courses, earn an associate’s degree and transition seamlessly as a junior to TSU. If followed exactly, all earned credit hours will apply toward a bachelor’s degree in the same discipline, and the student will be guaranteed admission to TSU.

“This program highlights the successful collaboration among all of our universities and community colleges,” said TBR Chancellor John Morgan. “It helps students achieve their goals and complete their degrees, but it also helps them do it in a more efficient and less expensive way, without sacrificing the quality of our academic programs.”

Along with TSU, other schools participating in the transfer pathways program include TBR’s 13 community colleges and six universities and UT’s three undergraduate campuses in Chattanooga, Knoxville and Martin. While the program lists options for 50 different majors, not all schools will offer all majors due to demand or resources. A complete list is available at www.tntransferpathway.org.

Tennessee State University offers 26 pathways as part of the program and include: Accounting; Agriculture-Agribusiness; Agriculture Animal Science; Agriculture Plant Science; Art (Studio); Biology; Business Administration; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Computer Science; Criminal Justice; Economics and Finance; Electrical Engineering; English; Health Performance and Sport Science; History; Business Information Systems; Speech Communications and Theatre; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Political Science; Nursing; Psychology; Social Work; Sociology; and Speech Communications and Theatre.

More information on TSU’s pathways is available at http://www.tntransferpathway.org/campuses/tennessee-state-university.

Each pathway outlines approximately 41 general education credit hours and 19 hours of prerequisites necessary for transfer. To ensure transfer, pathways must be followed exactly, and substitutions will not be accepted. Students who change pathways or majors are not guaranteed all courses will apply.

“The implementation of the transfer pathways is a giant step forward in creating a seamless process for earning a college degree for the citizens of Tennessee,” said TBR Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Paula Short. “We will be tracking the progress of our students and will work to constantly improve the process so that students receive the maximum benefit.”

Outreach efforts are planned to ensure ongoing communication with current and prospective students, high school guidance counselors, parents and community members.

More information is available for download and distribution on the transfer pathways website, www.tntransferpath.org.

For more information on the Tennessee Transfer Pathway program, contact the University of Tennessee System Office of Communications at 865.974.1114, or the Tennessee Board of Regents Office of Communications at 615.366.4417.

Cheryll Collins, recent graduate from the Masters School of Nursing (MSN) program, inspires advertising campaign for workplace protection from blood exposure among nurses and other health care professionals.

Tennessee State University School of Nursing student, Cheryll Collins, is now the new face for the advertising campaign “Risk for Mucocutaneous Blood Exposure for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals” sponsored by Becton Dickinson and Company (BD) Medical.

Collins, a registered nurse and an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN), was exposed to a blood droplet by a splash across her face when a patient abruptly moved while having an IV placed into their arm. She approached her employer, BD, about creating an awareness initiative to protect health care workers from blood exposure and the company decided to adopt the ad campaign.

Pursuing to make a difference for workplace protection, the campaign brings insight to needle stick safety devices and heightens awareness to the risk factors of blood exposure among nurses and other health care professionals.

“Discovering how I was at risk for HIV through a blood droplet found in my eye makes me more cautious about blood exposure. From my experience and through the campaign, I anticipate that others will attempt in changing their attitudes of accepting any unnecessary blood exposure,” said Collins, a graduate from the Master’s School of Nursing (MSN) program at the University.

Collins is featured in the campaign published in several nursing magazines such as Nursing 2011, The Infusion Nurses Society (INS) Standards and Guidelines for 2011, and The Journal of Emergency magazine. She has been invited to travel to Paris, France as a guest speaker at a conference hosted by 30 different hospital systems. She will also be lecturing at the Association of Vascular Access (AVA) Convention this month and the Association for Professions in Infection Control (APIC) Convention in October.

Hoping to enlighten others about the issue, Collins shares her story about mucocutaneous blood exposure on her personal blog. She plans to return to TSU for a post certificate for Nursing Education.

Tennessee State University President Portia Shields today announced plans for the major restructuring and reorganization of academic programs and colleges at the historic land-grant institution.

NASHVILLE, TN—(April 13, 2011)—Tennessee State University President Portia Shields today announced plans for the major restructuring and reorganization of academic programs and colleges at the historic land-grant institution.

The plans will discontinue eight academic programs that are not productive or mission-essential to the University; reorganize and/or consolidate marginally productive but mission-essential academic programs; realign a number of academic programs and colleges/schools; and reorganize academic schools and colleges.

The action outlined today by Dr. Shields followed several months of extensive deliberations, consultations and input from various stakeholders at the University, and is designed to right-size the institution, bring like programs together, strengthen programs that are mission central and that have the potential to grow, support TSU’s Carnegie Research designation, position the University to meet its strategic planning goals, and strengthen its fiscal health.

Among the academic programs to be discontinued are:
• B.A. Foreign Languages
• B.S. Physics
• Ed.S. School Psychology
• M.A. English
• M.S. Mathematics
• M.S. Music Education
• B.A. Africana Studies
• Ed.S. Administration and Supervision

While degrees will no longer be offered in these programs, a minor in Africana Studies and a minor in Physics will be created; additionally, foreign language classes will be offered for students on campus, online and through partnership with the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute. Academic programs that have been retained based upon their productivity and centrality to the University’s mission will be strengthened through additional resource support. The recommendations will go to the Tennessee Board of Regents for final approval.

As part of the reorganization, the School of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences has been renamed College of Agriculture and Bio-Environmental Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences has been renamed College of Arts and Humanities; and the School of Nursing has been merged into the College of Health Sciences. This reduces the number of academic colleges at the University from 8 to 7. A budget saving analysis will be finalized at the end of June and plans for program closure, consolidation, and re-organization will be completed at the end of summer 2011.

The University’s School of Nursing completed the registered nurse state licensure exam with a 100 percent pass rate for the 2009 calendar year.

Future nurses at Tennessee State University are making care and compassion count with their test scores. The 2009 class of the University’s School of Nursing completed the registered nurse state licensure exam with a 100 percent pass rate – making TSU the only public four-year Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) institution to exceed the national percentage of students passing the National Council Licensure Examination for the 2009 calendar year.

“There’s no surprise that 100 percent of our class was able to pass the state licensure exam on the first attempt,” said School of Nursing graduate Renata Powers and president of the 2009 class. After receiving a bachelor of science degree in psychology from TSU in 2005, she later returned to find a no-nonsense nursing program with a challenging curriculum and a nurturing environment.

“The faculty fully prepared us for the exam and for the environments we would enter as registered nurses. Even with limited resources at times, they kept us energized and encouraged,” said Powers, who now serves as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit at Metro General Hospital.

Issued by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the exam evaluates how well students are prepared to enter the nursing workforce. Recorded by calendar year with periodic testing dates, the national pass rate for 2009 graduates averaged at 89.49 percent. All 28 bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) graduates at TSU passed the exam on first attempt.

Dr. Verla Vaughan, interim director of the BSN Program at TSU, said, “The success in achieving a 100 percent pass rate is a testament to the rigor of our program and the quality of instruction delivered by dedicated and committed faculty. We expect to maintain that level of achievement on the state board licensing exam.”

Vaughan, the faculty, and Dr. Kathy Martin, dean of the School of Nursing, have enhanced the nursing curriculum through the use of technology in the classroom. The school developed a simulation lab with state-of-the-art equipment that includes simulated mannequins that can be programmed to act as real patients. They also utilized computer-programmed simulations of complex hospital medical emergencies.
